Lively Links

This week left me feeling really inspired. Monday - 3:30pm on Thursday were rough (presentations, papers, and general busy-ness galore), but after that, it was smooth sailing! Post-thursday, I fit 7 miles of outdoor running into my schedule, hit the slopes, saw my favorite band play live, spent some much needed time with some of my favorite people, and took a lot of ridiculous pictures. I'm still cracking up over some of them a few days later!

Lively links for the week

Unexpected perspectives of towering trees. Beautiful.

After spending a little over two weeks volunteering in Greece a year and a half ago, reading about how Greeks are really living due to the economic conditions is hard for me. It's interesting how hearing about austerity plans on the news (generally in the context of what it means for the Euro Zone) versus reading about how the people actually are faring casts the situation in a much different light:
"A quarter of all Greek companies have gone out of business since 2009, and half of all small businesses in the country say they are unable to meet payroll. The suicide rate increased by 40 percent in the first half of 2011. A barter economy has sprung up, as people try to work around a broken financial system. Nearly half the population under 25 is unemployed. Last September, organizers of a government-sponsored seminar on emigrating to Australia, an event that drew 42 people a year earlier, were overwhelmed when 12,000 people signed up." -NYT
I don't know what the solution is, but austerity doesn't seem to be benefitting the Euro Zone or the Greek people. Thoughts?

Opera and rap. Who know they could be so far from each other and yet so close? Why opera & rap are such lightening rods for dislike.

When was the last time you made actual things with your actual hands? None of my jobs (past or present) involve it...but things I do for fun that involve my hands (cooking, bar tending, working out knots in my friends' backs through awesome back rubs) certainly make me feel happier. These two articles (especially the second) are the most interesting things I've read in a while!

What would your life look like if you had a posse pushing you to be better?

How you feel when you're stressed is not a true measure of reality + 9 good reminders for stressful times. I love this part:
Just because you're afraid, doesn't mean you're in danger. Just because you feel alone, doesn't mean nobody loves you. Just because you think you might fail, doesn't mean you will....sometimes you just have to forget how you feel, remember what you deserve, and keep pushing forward.
This inspired me. Over Spring Break, I'm going to write a few letters to myself  (one for my high school self, another from my future self) & I encourage you to do the same.

Did you hear about how Target knows someone's pregnant before their friends & family do? This is just one example of how companies learn your secrets based upon your shopping habits...which isn't all that different from what Google & Facebook are doing online. Discuss.

Cute animal video of the week

Happy Sunday!
